As CM, Capt Amarinder had doled out grants of hundreds of crores for Patiala, which had been ignored under the previous 10-year term of the SAD-BJP government. Of the 60 wards in Patiala MC, 32 fall under Patiala Urban, two under Sanour and 26 under Patiala Rural - an assembly seat represented by cabinet minister Brahm Mohindra. The Congress is planning to field a strong candidate against Capt, who hails from the royal family of the erstwhile princely state of Patiala. Except Shiromani Akali Dal, no party has announced a candidate from Patiala Urban.
Post-exit from Congress, Amarinder has announced to contest the 2022 assembly elections from Patiala Urban with his newly founded party, Punjab Lok Congress (PLC), and to tie up with other parties and the BJP.
Two members of SAD had abstained from voting. On November 25, 25 councillors of the 63-member House had voted in Bittu’s favour, and 35 against. The bitter fallout was evident in the recently held high-voltage meeting of the Patiala municipal corporation, where Amarinder loyalist and Patiala mayor Sanjeev Sharma was suspended after failing to prove his majority.
